Various Cross Country Ideas
It is important to be able to quickly lower the wing and lay it flat on the ground. I have a checklist to ensure
that I can do it fast without missing a step. I had winds over 30kt with even stronger gusts. Storing the wing
this way can save the day.
I use a free standing two person tent. I know it so well that I can set it up in pitch dark in 2 minutes. It can be
set up on asphalt or concrete and large enough to throw all the gear inside. I can work on the flight planning
or cook inside since it is so roomy. On this picture you can see my tie down system that fastens the control
bar to the front and rear wheels on both sides. If the wing points into the wind, it can tolerate high winds in
this position since it is level and horizontal. The jacket of the pilot suite covers the engine to protect it from
rain.
The first line of defence - these rubber cords are permanently attached to the seat frame and hide behind
the sidebags and the seat during flight. When on the ground I can attach them to the control bar while still
sitting in the trike and then get out and set up the lines between the wheels and the control bar. This way I
can land in very windy conditions and safely store the trike without help.
